Thurlow Nunn round-up: Woodpeckers return to top with big win
Woodbridge Town returned to the top of the Thurlow Nunn Division One table on goal difference ahead of Whitton United after a comprehensive 5-1 win over March United, Matt Mackenzie scoring twice in their first game for three weeks.
The home side, with new signing Carlos Edwards watching on, took the lead after six minutes when Ben Garnham’s accurate through ball found Mackenzie and he lobbed away keeper David Beeny with an excellent finish.
Mark Ray’s pinpoint pass after 24 minutes found captain Alex Greggor and he easily beat Beeny to double the lead. Then George Bowman’s cross after 36 minutes was met by Mackenzie and his first time shot made it 3-0.
The away side pulled a goal back after 67 minutes when substitute Sean White’s cross found Brand and he made no mistake to make it 3-1. Bowman’s deflected free kick made it 4-1 after 76 minutes and a minute later the home side scored a fifth when Mackenzie’s cross found Keeble and his shot easily beat Beeny.
Also in the First Division, Leiston Reserves went down 2-0 at Victory Road to a young AFC Sudbury Reserve side, Kane Munday and Josh Buckles getting the goals.
In the Premier, Haverhill Borough secured their second consecutive league win with a convincing 3-1 victory over their neighbours from Long Melford.
Jarid Robson before the visitors equalised when a deflected shot rebounded to Hassan Ally who converted, giving Borough’s new goalkeeper Will Cook no chance.
Borough retook the lead after 27 minutes when an inch perfect pass from Tommy Hardwick found Robson in space and he lobbed the onrushing Darren Moyes in the Melford goal.
Borough secured the game early in the second half as Casey Phillips stooped to reach a Rory Bone corner and powered the header in.
Elsewhere, Walsham-le-Willows beat Fakenham Town 4-1, with a hat-trick from Jack Brame and a strike from Lee Warren. Kyle Plumb scored Fakenham’s sole reply from the spot after a foul by Callum Dongray in the area.
