Wisbech 3 Woodbridge 1

FOR half of this cup-tie Woodbridge held high hopes of pulling off a shock result before Wisbech, despite playing virtually the whole game with ten men, struck three times in the second half to win comfortably in the end.

It's now four defeats in a row for the Woodpeckers, who failed to make the most of their numerical advantage, often spoiling promising moves with poor-quality passing. Things certainly looked good for the visitors, though, in the opening two minutes. Rick Deasy played a perfect pass for Danny Phillips to run through on goal and when the young striker was brought down 25 yards out, Chris Dear was shown a red card and Neil Calver directed a superb free-kick into the top corner of the net.

Although his side was on the backfoot for most of the first half, Deasy directed a shot across the face of the home goal from a few feet out and both Phillips and Steve Dearsley sent long-range efforts narrowly wide.

Six minutes into the second-half Wisbech drew level when James McManus drilled a low shot into the bottom corner. It was no more than the Fen men deserved but their second goal was self inflicted by a Woodbridge side who were enjoying a decent spell at the time. Furnell was quick to capitalise on some slack defending and ran through to stroke a cool finish past Wilson.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser and they came close to finding one with Jerome Laidlaw just failed to connect with a deep cross from Jamie Scales but five minutes from time Furnell ran half the length of the field before rounding Wilson and putting the tie out of Woodbridge's reach.
