TEENAGE striker Anthony Wordsworth is hopeful his first two competitive goals for Colchester United will have played him into in-coming manager Paul Lambert's plans.

The 19-year-old youth team product twice put his side in front with tap-ins from a total of about four yards in the first half, however, three second half Cheltenham strikes ultimately rendered his efforts inconsequential.

"To be on the losing side after scoring my first goals was very disappointing," admitted Wordsworth.

"At 3-1 I thought we would crack on from there, but we've conceded three scrappy goals and a result is a result."

Winger Wordsworth was Colchester's top-goalscorer in pre-season, but after starting the season as a regular on the left-side, he found himself back on the subs bench in recent weeks.

Caretaker boss Kit Symons decided to recall him against the Robins though and his decision to try him out on the right, with Irishman Mark Yeates switching to the opposite flank, paid dividends in the first half.

Twice Wordsworth proved the 'fox in the box' by popping up on the goal line to tap in following a rebound off the keeper and a good ball from Yeates.

He said: "I scored quite a few in pre-season and then didn't score in seven games.

"Having missed three matches and then only being used as a sub against Tranmere and Bristol Rovers I wanted to show that I am capable.

"There are a lot of midfielders at the club and I'm willing to play anywhere at the moment. As long as I am on the pitch I don't care."

The youngster will now meet Lambert for the first time at Monday's training session and he hopes the Scotsman has seen enough to keep on playing him.

"I knew he was in the stands today and we all wanted to impress him. When you are on the pitch though things like that go out of your mind and you just want to be successful for yourself and your team mates."

He added: "Kit (Symons) and Joe (Dunne) have been brilliant over the past few weeks. they have gained a lot of respect in training, so it was very disappointing that we couldn't get him a result for the his last game."
