Sudbury 58 Ipswich YM 5

THE league form book prevailed as Ipswich YM were overwhelmed by a Sudbury side who are two leagues higher in the quarter-final of the Suffolk Cup at Moorsfield on Saturday.

Sudbury could and should have scored more points but eased off and made silly handling errors in the second half to ease YM's pain.

Sudbury scored two minutes into the game when Scott Harries touched down under the posts from a pass by Tom Kelling. The conversion was made by Jon Coone.

YM were soon back under pressure after failing to kick the required ten metres from the restart, and from a line-out YM failed to secure the ball and Matt Mason drove over for Sudbury's second try, converted by Ben Donnelly.

Ian Brown was next to get his name on the scoresheet when the blue and whites rolled a maul from a line-out and then Coone kicked ahead, ran on to collect himself before setting Mason away for a good try, converted by Coone.

Sudbury were scoring at a point a minute.

Rob Pound made a good run to break the defence and set Jim Lorking up for the next try and Kelling evaded a tackle off the back of a scrum and put Pound into space for Coone to touch down to make it 36-0 after half-an-hour.

YM had not been able to get much ball but they were rewarded for their efforts when Connors scored just before half-time but Sudbury had the last word when Harries again made the break and Coone increased his personal tally.

The second half was not as entertaining for the spectators.

Sudbury made a few tactical changes and YM had a player sin-binned in the first minute to compound their misery.

However, Sudbury had switched off at half-time and time and again they fell at the last hurdle with men over.

YM managed to cross the Sudbury line for a second time, only to be held up, and Sudbury's superior strength in the scrum prevented them gaining any advantage from the five-metre scrum.

George Spencer created space to give Coone his hat-trick and the forwards put pressure on to a tiring YM to give Stuart Whybrow his first try of the game.

In the closing seconds Sudbury moved the ball backwards and forwards across the pitch until Coone was able to run in his fourth, with his conversion going over on the final whistle.

Sudbury meet Ipswich in the semi-final, with Hadleigh awaiting the winners in the final.
