There were a lot of suggestions when it came to who’d take over hosting duties when The Great British Bake Off switched from BBC One to Channel 4. Children’s presenters Dick ‘n’ Dom where among them.

I’d have put money on them and think they’d have been amazing. Would they have done it?

“We weren’t approached, probably because if we had it would have ended in a massive food fight,” says the duo, appearing at Jimmy’s Festival this weekend.

“Neither of us can bake but we can cook,” says Dom, who’s a veggie while Dick’s a meat-eater. “Dick appeared on Celebrity MasterChef a few years ago and even though he can cook he had a few kitchen disasters.”

“It’s another world of stress being eagle-eyed by John Torode and Gregg Wallace,” adds Dick.

The quadruple BAFTA winners are known for shoes like Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow, Diddy Movies, Diddy TV, Splatalot and The Legend of Dick and Dom. Their science entertainment show Absolute Genius, which they won best presenters BAFTAs, is now filming it’s fifth series.

They’ve hosted Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old, appeared in the feature film Horrid Henry The Movie, headlined Butlins twice with a sell-out tour and even trod the boards to rave reviews in the West End as King Arthur and Patsy in Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Each genre has its own special place in their careers but TV, where it all began, remains number one.

“It’ll be 21 years this year, half our lives working together; so it’s pretty weird but we’re glad we’ve come this far and hopefully we’ll be together for another 21 years,” the say, adding communication is the key to their long success.

“You also have to realise you’re two separate people with your own lives and always come to a compromise.”

The pair met at the BBC in 1996 where Dick was a runner, making tea; and Dom was appearing as a magician on various shows. Both the same age and having just moved from their home towns they shared the same sense of humour.

“It pretty much worked from day one,” say the duo.

Do they ever look at each other and think this is no way for grown men to make a living?

“It’s great way to make a living, although one day we should probably get a proper job.”

The duo, appearing on the main stage at noon, Sunday, have recently beeng filming a new series of Diddy TV.

“A guest Diddy was Craig Revel Horwood from Strictly Come Dancing. We all know what he’s like as a judge but as a Diddy he was great fun and even sang the Strictly theme with a mouth full of Banana.”

As for their appearance this Sunday...

“It’s a show we’ve been touring for a while, Dick v Dom. We split the audience in half and it’s a fight to see who wins - the Dicks or the Doms.”
