A TV sitcom filmed in a historic Suffolk market town has scooped a prestigious Bafta gong.

Framlingham provided the backdrop for six-part BBC4 sitcom, Detectorists, which starred Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones.

And tonight, the show picked up the Bafta prize for Scripted Comedy, beating off competition from Harry and Paul’s Story of the Twos, Moone Boy and The Wrong Mans.

Written and directed by Crook, who also starred as wannabe archaeologist Andy, the action featured location after location of recognisable landscapes and venues from across the area, including the town’s Panorama gift shop.

Detectorists followed a pair of warring metal detectorists on a “journey of greed, betrayal, rejection and redemption”.

Crook, known for his roles in The Office and Pirates of the Caribbean, played a metal detecting obsessive opposite Golden Globe winner Jones’ best friend character.

The cast also included Rachael Stirling (Tipping The Velvet, The Bletchley Circle), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Being Human, Luther) and Lucy Benjamin (Eastenders, Casualty).

The show was also filmed in other parts of Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex.
