A new free music event planned for August Bank Holiday weekend is set to fill the void left by the popular Mansion of the Moon festival - and help Suffolk bands in their quest for stardom.

Greshams in Tuddenham Road, Ipswich is set to be transformed from a typical sports bar to a sparking live music venue for the Borderland Music Festival on Sunday, August 26.

• Organiser of the Mansion on the Moon Festival, which the Libertines were set to headline, announced on Monday that it was being cancelledThe event, which will run between noon and 10.30pm, is designed to give a platform to a series of Suffolk acts to perform.

“Nicole Klimowicz, events and marketing executive at Greshams Ipswich, has been arranging the festival with the rest of the team at Greshams. She said she had always harboured a desire to put on a music festival.”

She said: “I was a festival junky when I was 16 I remember going to my first festival at Latitude and then Download. I just loved them.

“Here at Greshams I just thought I would pitch the idea to Mark (Calver, Greshams owner). I didn’t expect him to say yes but he did.

“I go to a lot of gigs in Bury St Edmunds and have colleagues who go to shows in Ipswich, so we managed to get a list of local bands together and we have something for everyone on the line-up.

“We want to support local music and talent in our own community. I’m too busy to go to any festivals this year so this will be my festival for the year.”

Mark Calver, Greshams owner, added: “This is an event for local bands, the local talent.

“The support we have has been fantastic. Our sponsors have been fantastic, It’s expensive to put this kind of thing on and to get people to give us money has been a major factor in our ability to put this on.

“I would love for this event to grow to a much bigger size. We take things that we do seriously around here. If we didn’t think this could do well we wouldn’t support it.”

The event will include performances from Suffolk-based artists like City Glow and Connor Adams on both an indoor acoustic stage and a large outdoor site.

Street food fairs, a wellness centre with free yoga classes, rides and stalls will also be at the festival.

The event is free to attend but parking will cost £1, with proceeds going to the charities Age UK Suffolk and Fresh Starts New Beginnings.
