Homebrewers are invited to take part in an Ipswich-based brewery's competition.

Briarbank’s competition gives homebrewers a chance to have their beer brewed in a professional outlet and served behind a bar.

The event takes place over the weekend of October 28-29, the competition costs £5 to enter.

The contest has seven categories including porters and stouts, old ales, strong pale ales and speciality beers.

Each entrant can enter a maximum of three categories and are required to submit three unlabelled 500ml bottles no later than October 21.

Judging will take place on October 28. The final judging panel is yet to be announced but it will contain Briarbank’s very own brewer, Robert Lewis-Pyke.

An awards event will be held on October 29 where the category winners will be announced as well as the overall winner.

Entrants are encouraged to attend the event at the Fore Street brewery and bring along a bottle or two of their creation for others to try.

Last year’s winners were Charlie Abbott and Jason Jones who created Heavy on the Chips, a dark, roasty, full bodied porter.

Mr Abbott says his experience as winner of this competition was great.

He said: “We had a great time brewing with Rob and it was interesting to see how upscaling our recipe would turn out. Rob was very informative about the whole process and the experience we gained has proved invaluable in making our beers better.”

“Seeing our beer being served in the bar, and hearing the positive comments from regulars was great. We would recommend anyone who gets a similar chance to grasp it with both hands.”

Full details can be found on the Briarbank website.
