Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp will play the father of rock ‘n’ roll Sam Phillips when smash show Million Dollar Quartet visits Ipswich.

The Tony award-winning Broadway and West End musical will run from November 20-25 at the Regent.

Kemp sold more than 25million records worldwide, including a string of number one hits, as part of Spandau Ballet. His TV and film credits include EastEnders, for which he won a number of awards; and The Krays. Most recently he was a judge on the BBC show Let It Shine.

Legendary record producer Phillips made history when he brought Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins together at Sun Records Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.

Million Dollar Quartet includes more than 20 rock ‘n’ roll hits including Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, I Walk The Line and Great Balls of Fire.

It’s written by Tony Award nominees Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux and produced by Simon Friend, Mark Goucher, Tom O’Connell, Laurence Myers and Gavin Kalin. Olivier nominated Ian Talbot OBE, renowned for his tenure as both artistic and managing director at The Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park directs.

James Fairclough, Ipswich Borough Council’s head of culture and environment, said: “It’s wonderful yet another high profile West End show is coming to Ipswich, I know lots of people will have fond memories of Martin Kemp and Spandau Ballet and it’s really exciting the Ipswich audience will have the chance to see this show at East Anglia’s premier venue. We expect demand to be high for tickets.”

Tickets go on sale from 10am today. Read my chat with Peter Duncan, currently playing Phillips at Lowestoft’s Marina Theatre, here.
