A move which now sees the Stowmarket Aldi staff searching bags to stop shoplifting has divided customers, with some saying it will stop them visiting the store altogether.

Resident Kate Denny said the move is "appalling," adding: "I am horrified that in 2023 we have a problem with poverty and this is leading to an alleged increase in shoplifting.

"I am appalled that we are all being treated as potential offenders.

"The shame that this is causing to shoppers and staff is tangible."

Ellie Steers was subject to a bag check at the Stowmarket Aldi last week.

"I was asked to show the contents of my bag and the customer in front of me was asked to show her personal bag too," she said.

"There was no signage as we walked in and no member of staff telling customers as they came into the store.

"I can see why they are doing it, I would have just appreciated the opportunity to be made aware before reaching the tills."

On the other hand, Meryl Smith, 68, who lives in nearby Bildeston, agrees with the concept.

"Thefts cost us all money and food prices are high enough already," said Mrs Smith.

"If we want to keep prices low, we can't just sit back and allow thefts.

"It won't put me off visiting. I've got nothing to hide."

Echoing these sentiments, Julie Zarkos, 48, has been using the Stowmarket Aldi since it opened.

"100% this hasn't put me off visiting," she said.

"I'm more annoyed at people stealing."

Aldi confirmed that asking staff members to search bags to prevent shoplifting is not a commonplace practice across their stores nationwide.

They added that bag checks are only ever carried out with the consent of shoppers and only in some stores as a short-term measure.
