An Ipswich man has been fined almost £500 for failing to hand over a valid train ticket as while travelling in London.

AJ James, of Cauldwell Road in Ipswich, was asked to show his train ticket to inspectors as he travelled between Stratford and Liverpool Street stations in London on August 11 last year.

He did not do as asked, and the 27-year-old found himself facing a single charge of failing to hand over a valid ticket in a designated, compulsory ticket area.

At Barkingside Magistrates' Court on March 5, James was fined £220.

He was also ordered to pay £6.70 in compensation, a surcharge which contributes to victim services of £88, and court costs of £175.

This brought the total James has been asked to pay up to £489.70.

The case was dealt with through the single justice procedure, which deals with more minor offences that are not heard before a crown court.
