A television show’s resident “gardening guru” will be supporting a children charity’s work in Suffolk with a talk about her life in show business.

Christine Walkden, a horticultarist and regular feature on BBC’s One Show, will be giving the talk in aid of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) at Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall.

Entitled, The Life and Times of a Gardener, Walkden’s talk promises to reveal “the ups and downs of a live divided between the vegetable patch and the boardcasting studio”.

Money raised will go towards running the NSPCC’s services, such as the schools programme in Suffolk, which aims to educate children to stay safe from abuse.

From the ten-year-old who grew flowers on her first allotment to a presenter on national television, Christine is said to have dedicated her life to gardening.

A regular panel member on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time, Walkden also presents BBC One’s award-winning Glorious Gardens From Above and is also known for Christine’s Garden, which aired on BBC Two.

Walkden said: “The talk is basically about the thrills and spills of my life as a gardener and working in the media – the different jobs I have done, and what happens in the world of television and radio.

“I’m supporting the NSPCC because we should all be looking after children, it is a basic thing.

“Anybody who has got any humanity should get involved supporting the charity – they do flipping good work!”

Judith Bolton from East Suffolk NSPCC branch said: “Our local volunteers do an incredibly important job in schools across Suffolk, educating children on how to recognise and report abuse.

“We are delighted that Christine is going to share her gardening stories while helping to raise money for such a worthy cause.”

After the talk, which takes place at 2pm on Friday, May 25, refreshments, cream teas will be available at The Wentworth Hotel in Wentworth Road, Aldeburgh.

Tickets for the talk cost £12.50 and can be bought from the Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall box office and website. People can also buy tickets by emailing Judith Bolton at adiabatic@btinternet.com or by calling her on 01728 454 405.
