A ‘faceless’ fly-tipper has dumped a pile of rubbish on the lawn at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich to spread awareness of illegal tipping.
It comes as Suffolk Waste Partnership (SWP) relaunches its award-winning ‘Tip-off’ campaign which aims to let people know they shouldn’t turn a blind eye to the crime.
Daniel Wareing, from SWP, said: “The partnership is really keen to try and make people in Suffolk more aware of what they can do to help prevent the problem of fly-tipping from affecting our county and keeping it clean and green.
“What we are really keen to try and promote is the idea of the duty of care that all households have towards their waste, which is really important.”
He added that as a householder you could be liable if your rubbish is dumped illegally, so it is important to use a registered waste carrier and to know what will happen to your waste when they take it away.
The campaign has issued advise on how to your bit in the fight against fly-tipping
• If you see someone dumping rubbish, take down as much information as you can at the time and report it to your local district or borough council. Photos can be helpful but as fly-tippers are criminals make sure you don’t put yourself in harm.
• Don’t get caught out by rogue traders who offer cheap waste or scrap metal disposal by asking for their waste carriers registration details and refusing unsolicited offers to have rubbish taken away. Ask what is going to happen to your rubbish and seek evidence that it will be disposed of correctly and make sure you have a proper invoice and receipt for your waste.
