Ray Sallows and David Mehmed, of Rushmere St Andrews based Maxwell Wallace Homes, have got the Lifesaver: Evening Star Christmas Appeal 2006 off to a flying start with a cheque for £1,000.

The money is the first major donation towards our Christmas appeal, which kicked off this week, and aims to buy a state-of-the-art heart scanner for the hospital's accident and emergency department.

Mr Sallows said: “We are happy to make a donation to the Lifesaver Appeal as we are all aware of the financial constraints on the NHS at the present time.

“A scanner like this is so important as it is going to a local hospital for the use of local people, and we all know of friends and relatives who have suffered with heart problems.

“A scanner of this type will help save the unnecessary loss of life in our local community.

“This is a fantastic appeal and one we are happy to support.”

The Star appeal aims to raise £22,000 for a cardiac ultrasound machine for Ipswich Hospital's A&E department.

The machine quickly helps doctors diagnose cardiac conditions, including heart failure, and is expected to help around 1,000 people every year.

Currently, the hospital relies on older technology such as x-rays.

It has other ultrasound machines in the radiology department but often A&E patients need a scan immediately and the new machine will be on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

We aim to reach the £22,000 target by mid January next year.

n If you would like to support the appeal send cheques made out to Lifesaver: Evening Star Christmas Appeal 2006 to 30 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP4 1AN. Members of the East of England Co-operative Society can help by quoting the dividend number 977 at the till.
