AN oil painting of the river Orwell owned by the Queen Mother's servant William Tallon was sold for £20,000 - £12,000 more than expected - at an auction on Saturday.
Before the auction, at Reeman Dansie in Colchester, experts predicted that the picture, titled 'Half Tide On The Orwell' by Norwich-born Edward Seago, would sell for between £6,000 and £8,000.
It was snapped up by a mystery bidder.
The picture was among seven hundred of Mr Tallon's treasures which sold for £440,000 at the nine hour auction.
Mr Tallon and Mr Seago became close friends and Mr Tallon ended up owning several works by Seago, whose work is now much sought-after.
