A DRIVER in his early 90s is fighting for his life today after an accident at the Freston crossroads.
The road to the Shotley peninsula was completely blocked by the collision between a van and a Peugeot.
The elderly male driver had to be cut from the car by firefighters and put on a spinal board.
He was taken to Ipswich Hospital with chest, arm and leg injuries and Suffolk police said his injuries were life-threatening.
Ambulances and fire appliances, as well as the police, were called to the accident which blocked the main road to villages on the Shotley peninsula shortly at about 8.30am today.
No one else was hurt in the accident which caused serious problems for rush-hour traffic heading to Ipswich from the peninsula.
Traffic had to be diverted through Holbrook and Tattingstone while emergency services worked to clear the road, which has now been re-opened.
