A MAN hacked off his own arm in a chainsaw accident - before calmly knocking on a neighbour's door and asking for help.
It is thought that brave John Stirling was cutting a tree yesterday morning when his chainsaw slipped, slicing off his arm below the elbow.
Neighbour Steve Francis said Mr Stirling was “relaxed” when he knocked on his door to ask for help, and he did not realise that anything was wrong until he glanced down to see his arm was missing.
He packed his neighbour's arm in a bag with frozen pastries to keep it cold until Mr Stirling got to hospital in Brighton.
He has since had surgery to reattach the limb, which doctors believe has been successful.
