SAFETY work is to be undertaken in a Felixstowe town centre street where there have been a string of accidents at junctions.

In the latest accident last Saturday, an elderly woman had to be cut free from her car and suffered bruising and whiplash injuries.

The car was initially involved in a collision from the side with another car which came out of the Cowley Road junction into Cobbold Road.

The driver of the car, the injured woman's husband, who declined to be named, said: “It poked me into the pavement and I tried to pull out but I clipped the parked van.

“I have been driving 47 years and never had an accident in my life before.”

He was pleased to hear safety work would be done in Cobbold Road.

The driver said: “The problem is the cars parked along there near the junctions - people avoiding paying in the big car park there - and then drivers having difficulty seeing to come out onto Cobbold Road.

“Something needs to be done to make it safer.”

Suffolk County Council has drawn up a scheme costing tens of thousands of pounds which is to be put in place early next year.

The scheme will involve building tabletop road humps in Cobbold Road at the junctions of Cowley Road - exactly where the accident happened - and Leopold Road, along with extended parking restrictions.

There will also be new parking restrictions at the junctions of Princes Road, Queens Road and Tomline Road - with the aim to increase visibility at the junctions to help make it safer for drivers pulling out into Cobbold Road.

The street is one of the main roads to the town centre, connecting Garrison Lane and the Crescent Road/Hamilton Road traffic lights and is used by hundreds of schoolchildren on bikes and walking every day going to and from Deben High School.
