TRAVELLERS had some good news today when the Channel Tunnel partially reopened after Thursday fire.
A reduced freight service began operating overnight through the undamaged tunnel, and the first passenger trains started operating at 6am.
But passengers hoping to take their cars through the tunnel would have to wait, Eurotunnel said.
"We are giving priority to the truck shuttles and Eurostar passengers. At the moment we don't know when the car shuttles will start again,'' a spokeswoman said.
The blaze was finally extinguished yesterday morning after hundreds of firefighters fought throughout Thursday night to bring it under control.
It was unclear today when the tunnel would fully reopen - in 1996 the tunnel ran a limited service for many months after a serious fire caused £200 million of damage.
