SHE'S been doing good turns every day for more than 50 years.

And now 61-year-old Gloria Powell has been rewarded for her dedication to the Girl Guides and St John Ambulance, with an MBE for services to the community.

Mrs Powell, of Hadleigh, has been involved in guiding since she was just eight and is now the district commissioner for the Guides.

She runs the fifth and first Hadleigh Guides and the fourth Hadleigh Brownies and has volunteered for St John Ambulance for more than 20 years, joining the Hadleigh Division in its infancy.

Mrs Powell said: “I started in the Brownies and I just carried on. I love being able to do a lot of different activities and give people a sense of direction.

“I take part in activities like abseiling and canoeing and there is a great friendship.

“I'm so pleased and very happy to have the charitable and voluntary work that I have done over the years recognised by people within my own sphere of working, although I did not do it for reward or award.

“I have been touched by the amount of congratulations and the lovely sentiments I've received from those around me.”

Mrs Powell, who has three children and two grandchildren, including 11-year-old Guide Yasmin, also plays an active role in her church.

She has also been involved with the transportation of disabled people to day centres and now works as a teaching assistant at St Mary's School in Hadleigh.
