A RESCUE operation is under way after a train bound for East Anglia hit a footbridge early today.Initial reports say that the train is upright after the incident at Barrow Old Station in Loughborough, Leicestershire.
RESCUERS have freed a train driver from the cab of an East Anglia-bound train after it hit a footbridge early today.
British Transport Police said the driver was trapped after the accident at Barrow upon Soar Station in Loughborough, Leicestershire
It is reported that a tipper truck first struck the bridge, sending it falling into the path of the oncoming train.
Only six passengers were onboard the Midland Mainline Nottingham to Norwich service at the time. One suffered minor injuries.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: "At 6.30 this morning a lorry bumped into a pedestrian footbridge near Barrow upon Soar station, just north of Leicester, causing the footbridge to fall on to the tracks.
"An emergency stop message was sent to all trains in the area but the 0613 Nottingham to Norwich service with six passengers on board was unable to stop and struck the bridge.
"No passengers were injured and they continued their journey by cab.
"The Midlands main line is blocked north of Leicester at this time with services from London terminating at Leicester.''
