SUFFOLK'S roads and railways were jammed with frustrated travellers stuck in long tailbacks today after two crashes on the A14.

The separate smashes on the accident-prone road resulted in gridlock through Ipswich's streets and also had a knock-on effect for train commuters.

One of the collisions, where a van flipped over the central reservation from one side of the carriageway to the other, left two people in hospital with suspected fractures.

The major problems started at about 6.15am when a lorry overturned after colliding with a crash-barrier and swinging round in the road, nearly completely blocking the Stowmarket-bound carriageway of the A14 at Wherstead.

In the ensuing chaos delays built up from the A14's junction with Nacton and both Wherstead Road and Nacton Road were crammed with extra cars making their way into Ipswich. The road was closed on and off by police and then fully at 9.30am while a crane was brought in to recover the lorry.

The vehicle was removed and the road had reopened in both directions by 11.20am.

The accident also impacted train journeys from Ipswich to London as the silver Volvo lorry struck a railway bridge on the route meaning 'one' services to the capital were subject to delays and cancellations. The track was reopened at 9am.

Frustrated motorists Steve Doick, whose journey to work was delayed by around 45 minutes, said: “We were moving, but very slowly, maybe ten metres at a time and then stopping.

“It is very frustrating because when there is one problem on the roads it causes a standstill everywhere else and there is nothing you can do about it. And there always seem to be so many problems on the A14.”

Another driver reported a delay of 75 minutes as he travelled from Kesgrave to Ipswich town centre.

There were also delays on the A14 as a result of an earlier accident between the junctions with Claydon and the A140 when a van travelling in the Ipswich-bound direction flipped over and landed on the Stowmarket-bound carriageway.

The male driver of the van was not thought to have been seriously injured but his two male passengers were both taken to Ipswich Hospital, one with a suspected fractured knee, the other with a suspected fractured arm.

One lane of the Stowmarket-bound road was closed following the accident at about 5.50am, and it was not reopened until about 8.20am.

Both accidents happened following a night of heavy rain, with an above average 0.8incs of rainfall in just one night.

The bad weather conditions meant police officers also had to deal with two other crashes in the county.

At about 6.30am one vehicle went into a barrier near the junction with Woodbridge Road and Argyle Street in Ipswich. No one is thought to have been injured in the smash.

At just after 5am a 35-year-old motorcyclist was taken to hospital with a back injury after falling from his motorbike on the slip road into Morrisions supermarket in Grange Farm Road, Felixstowe.

A spokesman for Suffolk police urged all motorists to take extra care on the county's roads in bad driving conditions.

He said: “There is a lot of rain at the moment and there has been some flooding overnight so we would urge people to be cautious when driving.”
