MID Suffolk District Council has been reported to the ombudsman in the wake of its decision to approve a new duck rearing operation for up to 12,000 birds.

The controversial complex in Mendlesham Green, near Stowmarket, was given the go ahead at the end of July subject to conditions.

But Carolyn Triscott, a Mendlesham Green resident and a former parish councillor, has now reported the council to the ombudsman - even though the authority said it has acted correctly.

She said she was concerned that not all views were taken into account on the application.

She said: “I am questioning whether the meeting was conducted properly. Did they take account of these contrary views? If you live in a village in the countryside you expect manure on the fields and muck on the roads. We get flies and smells, we know that, but it is a question of what is reasonable.”

Rosalind Hands, a spokeswoman for Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “We did everything in accordance with normal planning procedures, regulations and laws.

“As far as we are concerned we did nothing wrong. We sent a letter to the ombudsman about this at the end of September and are awaiting a decision.”
