SHOPPERS are being urged to look after their bags following a number of purse thefts in Ipswich.
In many of the thefts, victims were unaware they had fallen victim to criminals until they went to pay for items and found their purse or wallet stolen.
On a few occasions, victims reported being bumped in to or jostled.
Peter Lickert, Ipswich crime reduction officer, encouraged shoppers to keep the contents of their bag to a minimum and only carry as much cash as is necessary.
He continued: “There is a lot of personal information in a handbag, as well as credit cards, and car and house keys.
“While there has never been any violence displayed during these offences, police are well aware of the distress and inconvenience caused to victims who lose money and other keepsakes from their purses.
“Shoppers are easily distracted when trying on clothes or looking after children.”
