A DRIVER has been arrested and two young moped riders rushed to hospital, one of them with severe head injuries, following a crash in Ipswich.

Police and paramedics were called to Anglesea Road shortly before 6pm yesterday where they found the two moped riders with serious injuries and a damaged Ford Mondeo.

The driver of the Mondeo was arrested at the scene and taken to Bury St Edmunds police station, and police want to trace the driver of a silver Peugeot which is believed to have been involved.

Acting Sergeant Paul Smith said the moped riders had turned right into Anglesea Road from Orford Street, where their view would have been obstructed by a parked car.

Skid marks clearly showed the Mondeo had begun to skid to a halt some distance from the point of impact.

Shortly after 6.30pm police had cordoned off the section of the road just past the junction with Orford Street.

Both bikers were rushed to Ipswich hospital by the ambulance and police confirmed that the parents of one of them had been informed.

Debris including the wreckage of two mopeds, a Starway and a Yamaha Neo, as well as crash helmets and trainers was strewn across the stretch of road.

Greg Cushnahan, of Anglesea Road, held the hand of one of the youngsters while he waited for paramedics to arrive.

Mr Cushnahan said: “I saw a guy in the road surrounded by debris, he had obviously come off one of the mopeds.

“I went over to him, he was shaking and badly injured. I held his hand and talked to him until the paramedics arrived.

“He was shocked and not talking much sense.”

A female resident of Anglesea Road who did not want to be named said she had comforted the other rider.

She said he had told her as he lay injured that they were both 16 years old and had just left school.

Police would like to talk to anyone who witnessed the accident, particularly the driver of the silver Peugeot, which they believe was travelling with the Mondeo.

Anyone who saw what happened should contact Sgt Paul Smith at Martlesham road policing unit on 01473 613500.
