A GRUELLING challenge has left a group of firefighters recovering today, but it was all worth it for a good cause.

Six firefighters from Green Watch at Princes Street fire station in Ipswich climbed peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in less than 24-hours, and all with a 20kg dummy in tow.

The team had wanted to do something out of the ordinary to raise money for cash-strapped charity Suffolk School for Parents, which is why they added the extra difficulty of the dummy, something they believe has never been done before as part of the three peaks challenge they were completing.

Watch manager David Edwards said: “It was very hard, very difficult.

“When we got to the top the weather was horrible, raining and very cold.

“We found that carrying the stretcher with the dummy was difficult because the paths were very narrow and it was treacherous, and at points it seemed like we came close to falling off.

“We ended up trying to do a fireman's lift with the dummy which was difficult as it weighs 20kg.”

However after enduring miserable conditions while climbing both up and down Scafell in the English Lake District and Ben Nevis in Scotland the men had nicer weather as they made their way up Snowdon in Wales.

Eventually they completed their challenge in 23 hours and 12 minutes, raising between £6,000 and £10,000 for charity.
