POLICE are investigating a serious late night attack on Saturday which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.
The man is said to be fighting serious and life-threatening injuries after the assault in Bury St Edmunds.
The attack happened at the junction of Thingoe Hill and Fornham Road, in the north of the town, and the area was closed on Saturday while officers carried out investigations.
Emergency crews, including paramedics, were called to the scene at around 3am after reports of a man lying injured in the road.
The man, thought to be around 40 years old and from the Bury St Edmunds area, was taken to the town's West Suffolk Hospital.
He has since been transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where he is said to be in a “critical condition”.
A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We got called to a male lying in the road.
“The call may have been from someone who didn't want to approach the patient.
“The patient's condition was serious.”
A spokesman for Suffolk police said no one had been arrested.
Police could not confirm what type of attack it had been, or if there was a weapon involved.
Officers are today appealing for witnesses to the assault. Anyone who saw the incident, or who has information, is asked to call Suffolk police on 01473 613500.
