The party parked up over the weekend after leaving a site elsewhere in Suffolk.
A spokesman for the travellers said they were planning to leave on Friday and would be heading north to either Bradford or Leeds.
Trevor Lord, parish clerk of Brightwell, Foxhall and Purdis Farm, said he was unaware of the travellers' arrival.
He said travellers had never used the site in the past.
For more than 30 years, The Hollies was the home of the Civil Service sports and social club in Ipswich.
It had four football pitches, two cricket pitches, tennis and netball courts, and indoors squash courts.
Footballers Keiron Dyer, Matthew Upson and Richard Wright all plied their trade their during their youth football days with The Hollies, formerly known as Whitton Sports.
The 18-acre site was vacated in 2001 and has lain empty since.
