A POLICE investigation is under way today after vandals wrecked a riverfront bandstand.
The incident happened on Woodbridge's riverfront between 4pm on Saturday and 8am yesterday.
Offenders ripped up seats, leaving it totally unusable.
Suffolk Coastal District Council is expected to mount a clean-up operation today.
Woodbridge Mayor Jim Bidwell spoke of his outrage at the vandalism.
He said: “This is very upsetting. The Sunday morning walkers with their children and dogs will be upset at the sight of this. It has a bad effect on our cafes and drinking places.
“I am outraged at the vandalism and senseless cost to the public exchequer.
“We were discussing the lighting of the riverfront at the council meeting last Tuesday with a view to improving it. We clearly did not move fast enough. It's so senseless. There are a tiny majority who seek to cause trouble.
“There's already a small rash of graffiti which we are attending to with the co-operation of Suffolk Coastal District Council.”
Anyone with information should contact Pc Fairweather at Woodbridge police station on 01473 613500 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
