MILLIONS were today due to remember the 2,973 people killed in the worst terrorist attack in history forever known simply as 9/11.

At 1.46pm today it will be exactly five years since American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of New York's World Trade Center beginning a day which can never be forgotten.

Ceremonies were being held around the world today to remember the victims of those devastating attacks with many victims' families gathering at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, where a moment of silence will be held to mark the exact moment the first jet hit.

Some 120 British police officers were due to join members of New York's police and fire departments to form an honour guard.

In Suffolk, a special memorial ceremony will be held at St Joseph's College to remember Ipswich brothers Andrew and Timothy Gilbert who were among those killed in the Trade Center attacks.

As the memories of 9/11 come back messages of grief have been posted on dozens of special remembrance websites. For Andrew Gilbert one read: “No, we have not forgotten any of you”. And for Timothy messages said “God bless you” and “he taught everyone around him how to be a great person and truly left a mark on the world”.
