A RETIRED deputy head teacher has today vowed the “show must go on” after stepping into the lead role of an Ipswich theatre group's latest production.

Brenda Caddick was cast in the role of Melody just weeks before musical Gotta Sing Gotta Dance is due to be performed by the Ipswich Operatic and Dramatic Society (IODS).

Mrs Caddick, of Ferry Road, Felixstowe, was offered the part after another actress pulled out of the production due to illness. She jumped at the chance.

She said: “I had been in the chorus but the show must go on. I'm really looking forward to opening night. I have played leads in the past and Melody is a really interesting and exciting part to play.”

Written and directed by Ipswich solicitor James Hayward, Gotta Sing Gotta Dance charts the life in show business of singer and dancer Melody Jones.

Mrs Caddick said: “Melody's mother always wanted to perform but never did. She pushed her daughter to go on the stage. The show looks back at Melody's life from the viewpoint of an older woman. We meet her first boyfriend and watch her progression through the 60s, 70s and 80s to the present day.”

Including show tunes and pop music, the show is due to be performed at the Spa Pavilion, in Felixstowe, in early October. Mrs Caddick added: “I'm getting to know the part now. Melody is quite a lonely woman, she has moved from place to place throughout her life, as performers do.”

Mr Hayward, of Constable Road, Ipswich, said: “Theatre is one of my passions and musical theatre is very special. I got the idea from watching a 'whatever happened to' television programme. I am so grateful to Brenda for stepping in. She is doing a fantastic job creating a believable character.”
