TALKS are to take place next week to decide what to do with more than £1million paid by Suffolk motorists in car park charges.
One Suffolk County Council bank account benefits from around £570,000 a year from fees paid at Cromwell Square car park, in Ipswich, the Cornhill and Angel Hill car parks, in Bury St Edmunds, and a number of on-street pay and display schemes in both towns.
That account currently has £1,078,000 in it and county councillors are to meet to decide what to do with the £754,000 available to be spent on roads and transport schemes across the county.
This figure is the money that is left once the cost of running these car parks has been taken away.
Councils from across Suffolk have been invited to bid for money for schemes in their area and some of the proposals submitted include spending £100,000 on improving bus stops across Ipswich, creating a new entrance to the Cromwell Square car park in Ipswich from Franciscan Way at a cost of £150,000 and creating an out of town lorry park in Hadleigh.
However, none of these have been short-listed for the cabinet's approval.
Those that look likely to get the go-ahead include four new residents' parking schemes in various parts of Ipswich, costing a total of £50,000, and the creation of a number of wheelchair/pram crossings at side roads in the town, at a cost of £50,000.
Other schemes being recommended include spending £5,000 extending the car park at Trimley St Martin village hall in a bid to stop people parking on pavements, and resurfacing the track to Farlingaye High School in Woodbridge.
Councillors from Suffolk County Council's cabinet will decide which schemes should get the go-ahead at a meeting in Ipswich next Tuesday.
