IPSWICH Hospital has today refuted claims that the MRSA which killed baby Luke Day probably came from a member of its staff.
Over the weekend a national newspaper claimed microbiologists had identified the most likely source of the superbug as a doctor or nurse.
The hospital today branded the claim "spurious" and said investigations are still ongoing.
Jan Rowsell, spokeswoman for the hospital, said: "This is not a comment which has ever come from Ipswich Hospital because we simply don't know where the MRSA came from.
"We have continued to investigate since it happened and there is a lot of work ongoing.
"We will continue to do absolutely everything in our power to find out."
Two-day old Luke Day died after contracting MRSA at the hospital in February.
Initial inquiries by the hospital's microbiologists failed to find the source of the superbug.
Swabs were taken from rooms on the maternity unit, from equipment and from more than 60 members of staff but all of these drew a blank.
The hospital is now working alongside the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Strategic Health Authority in a bid to find out how the tragedy happened.
Interviews will be carried out with all members of staff involved, and all the procedures used during Luke's birth and the first few hours of his life will be scrutinised.
Luke's family are continuing their fight for answers and are currently waiting to hear from the leaders of the three major political parties.
On Thursday The Evening Star took them to the House of Commons to present letters to representatives of Tony Blair, Michael Howard and Charles Kennedy.
