A MAN is in hospital with serious burns after an explosion at a Brantham factory today.

Emergency crews were called to Wardle Storey's manufacturing plant in Factory Lane at about 3.40pm, following the explosion.

Between 40 and 50 firefighters helped battle a fire while an air ambulance from Essex took the injured 55-year-old to the burns unit at Chelmsford's Broomfield Hospital.

A spokesman from the ambulance service said he had suffered extensive burns to his hands, chest, face and abdomen which were serious and possibly critical.

Commuters were also affected by the explosion as trains on the London mainline were stopped as a safety measure. The train services are expected to be affected until late into the night.
