A CARELESS burglar who helped steal a safe from Seckford Golf Club but left his fingerprint behind, is today awaiting his fate.

Daniel Turner, Shackleton Road, Ipswich, pleaded guilty to stealing the free standing safe when he appeared before South East Suffolk Magistrates Court in Ipswich.

The 22-year-old was among three men who broke in to the club. They escaped with the money box and the £2,290 in cash inside it, despite setting a burglar alarm off.

Prosecutor Nigel Gilbert said the theft took place at night sometime between June 8 and 9.

He told the court when the three men broke in through a window at the golf club they tripped the burglar alarm.

The retreated for a while, waiting to see if police would come. But when no one arrived, the trio forced open the security shutters on the windows, took an implement from the shed, and cut the frame of the window away with it.

Turner, who left a fingerprint on the window frame, was one of those who went into the office, picked up the safe and carried it out of the premises.

Once they made their getaway they broke into the safe and shared out the money. Turner's share of the booty was £750.

Mr Gilbert said police did not arrest Turner, who has previous convictions, until last Thursday . When they did he made a full confession during interview.

The golf club is now attempting to claim back £6,506.32 to cover the cash which went missing, the damage to its premises and the replacement locks to the safe, Mr Gilbert added.

No mention was made during the hearing of the names of the other men involved in the burglary.

Chairman of the bench Angela Pratt told Turner the matter would be sent to crown court for sentencing at a later date.

She said: "We are not going to accept this case. We are going to transfer this to crown court. The damage that was done, the high value of the theft and the deliberate, planned and group action, all make this a serious offence."

Turner was released on conditional bail, but he must reside at his Shackleton Road home, adhere to a curfew between 7pm and 7am and not enter Woodbridge or the Bealings.
