VANDALS were today blamed for rail chaos which delayed journeys by more than two hours.

Trains from London to East Anglia suffered serious delays last night after overhead wires were brought down between Needham Market and Stowmarket.

And after engineers investigated the damage to the wires and the locomotive involved, they said vandals had thown something on to the roof of the train.

Peter Meades, public affairs manager for 'one' Anglia, said: "Our engineers have found things on the roof of the locomotive that should not be there - it looks as if they were thrown on by vandals.

"The incident would have to have happened in the Needham Market area, certainly north of Ipswich.

"Once we have absolutely confirmed this, we will be discussing it with the British Transport Policeand it will be for them to investigate the matter further," he said.

The problems caused delays for travellers of up to two hours during yesterday's evening rush hour.

The incident happened at about 5pm as the 3.30pm from London was approaching Needham Market.

Both lines were shut, and it was not until 6.45pm that engineers managed to re-open one of the tracks.

The second track was not reopened until 10.30pm last night - and services did not get back to normal until this morning.

"This vandalism, if that's what it was, caused serious disruption to thousands of travellers," said Mr Meades.

"It was not just those travelling north of Ipswich - the knock-on effects, with trains not being in the right place, meant there were delays throughout the network yesterday evening."
