DEJECTED Greenwich residents have stopped running a community group because of a lack of support, the Evening Star can reveal today.

The Greenwich Community Group had been campaigning for five years and played a major role in pushing for developments to the south-east of Ipswich. In March 2002 they cleaned up the area by clearing the streets of rubbish and regularly held events like barbecues, pancake days, Christmas events and trips.

However, only a handful of people turned up for the latest meeting and they decided not to continue after their next event.

Pat Tatum, of the group, said: "We cannot carry on. There are only three or four people doing anything.

"We talked among ourselves and decided we have had enough.

"We tried to do a neighbourhood watch scheme and I sent out 90 leaflets to see if anyone wanted to join but only got four answers back.

"We have all done what we can but I think people do not want to be involved in community stuff. People like to go in and shut their door and not do anything about it.

"We have not had much support for the events apart from Halloween."

The group was originally based in a school in Robeck Road but, when that was knocked down, they found themselves homeless.

They campaigned for their own community centre to be built and nearly 100 people attended a meeting in June 2001 to discuss their options.

However, despite their repeated efforts, no suitable premises could be found and meetings were sometimes held in people's houses.

The group was eventually based at the Landseer Play Centre, but this was not ideal as it is not in Greenwich, but nearby Gainsborough.

As they were not based in the area they struggled to attract people to the meetings.

The group still has a small amount of funds left and they plan to put that towards improving the facilities in the recreation area in Hawke Road.

n The last event organised by the Greenwich Community Group will be an Easter Bonanza at the Landseer Play Centre from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday, April 7.

Ipswich Mayor Penny Breakwell will be present and there will be workshops, a miniature gardening display, and fun for people of all ages.
