A SUFFOLK pub was today allowed to open – but for what could be the last time.

The Angel at Woodbridge was shut over the weekend after it was served with a closure order, imposed because of problems with anti-social behaviour.

It expired early today and was not renewed – but magistrates are due to decide whether to renew the pub's licence tomorrow and police are appealing against the renewal.

The closure order was made under the Licensing Act 1964, on the basis that "there are reasonable grounds to believe there is likely to be disorder on, or in the vicinity of and related to, the premises" said a spokeswoman for Suffolk police.

A further 24-hour extension to the order was made on Saturday and another 12-hour extension was imposed at 3.20pm yesterday.

Licensee Amy Rogers was warned on Friday that she could be fined up to £20,000 and given a prison sentence of up to three months if she failed to comply with the closure order.

Drinkers had to leave the pub, in Theatre Street, and a notice went up outside telling potential customers that it was closed until further notice.

Police acted after many complaints over the last 12 months about the anti-social behaviour of people congregating outside the pub and using the premises.
