DESPITE the emigration of many national call centres to India an Ipswich- based service will be staying put.

EDF Energy employs 80 staff in its Ipswich call centre and to maintain customer service, the company has decided to keep its services in the UK.

The company's chief executive, Vincent de Rivaz said: "Our centres are not just call centres, they are customer service centres and are key to the service ethos we have created.

"We believe we should take direct responsibility for delivering what our customers expect and I have no doubt that our ability to work directly with our own top quality people here in the UK will be a competitive advantage in the future."

The company has worked with trade unions to reach the decision and has agreed to look for a better way than outsourcing to deliver efficiencies.

Mr de Rivaz added: "Our customer service centres are more than information providers, they are the primary source of contact between EDF Energy and its customers.

"This is something so core to us that we want to make sure it's the best it can be and we believe we can achieve this by keeping our centres in the UK."
