Police warning over bogus callers

POLICE at Felixstowe are today warning people to be on their guard after an elderly woman had £300 stolen by fake water company officials.

Officers said one of the men "forcefully persuaded" the 86-year-old to let him inside the house, saying there was an emergency.

He began checking her radiators while his accomplice sneaked into the property in Tomline Road, searched it and stole her savings.

The woman was not injured but was left very upset by the incident. She has been unable to give a clear description of the man who claimed he was from "the water board".

Felixstowe police sector commander Insp Andy Bushell said: "This was a very nasty incident and the man was quite forceful in his approach.

"Officers are investigating thoroughly and we would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area and seen these men calling at houses.

"It is very important that people should never let into their house anyone that they do not know and must insist on checking identities."

Crime prevention officers say householders should think about whether they are expecting a visitor before answering the door, check who it is by using a window or spyhole, make sure the back door is locked, and use a door chain.

The householder should check the details of the caller and ask for identification, preferably a card with a photograph of the person on it, and then phone the company to check it is genuine – a genuine caller will not mind waiting.

People should remember to note the description of an unsolicited caller and if possible take down the colour, make and registration of their car. If in doubt, do not let them in and call 999.
