It is the second fatal accident in the same area during the last three years.

Mechanic Alan Hodgkinson 38 of Wellington Road Eye died instantly from the impact of the Scania articulated lorry as he walked along the A14 in November 2000.

Emergency services were called to the latest tragedy around 9.20am today and a spokeswoman for the East Anglian Ambulance service said they had received several calls.

It is thought the man was the only person in the red Peugeot 406.

Police, fire and ambulance were all called to the accident and the lanes were closed off for a time while they dealt with it.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police put out traffic warnings to motorists trying to get into Ipswich.

Drivers were expected to face delays throughout the morning.

In a separate incident, two casualties suffered minor injures after three vehicles were involved in accident on the notorious A140 near Diss today.

The injured were taken to Norfolk and Norwich hospital, one was believed to be male around 15-years-old.

Long tailbacks were expected to cause havoc with rush hour traffic after the collision which happened at around 8am.

Although one lane remained open, queues of traffic were causing long delays at Stuston.

Campaigners have been fighting hard to have the busy, heavily congested road duelled for the last ten years to make the road safer after numerous accidents.

The latest injuries, though not though to be serious comes after around 80 fatalities on the stretch of road in the last decade.

The road was reopened at around 9am and the traffic began to clear.
