A SUFFOLK driver was fighting for his life today after a car crash near Sudbury.

Inspector Alex Morrison, of Suffolk Police, described the man's condition as "very serious" after the accident in which the motorist's car left the road and is believed to have ended up in a ditch.

The crash happened just before 2.40am in Hobbs Lane, Glemsford.

The injured man was the only occupant of the red BMW convertible involved in the smash.

Relatives of the victim were being informed of the accident by police officers today.

Although police were unable to name the driver today, Insp Morrison confirmed it was thought he is from the Sudbury area.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the incident.

An ambulance crew treated the seriously injured motorist at the scene before taking him to the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

The man was then transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge which specialises in the treatment of severe head injuries.

Specialist accident investigators and scenes of crime officers were today inspecting the area where the crash took place to determine its cause.

Police stressed this was a matter of routine in an inquiry into a serious accident.

Insp Morrison appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash, or who saw the red BMW convertible in Hobbs Lane around the time of the accident, to contact police.

If you have any information which could help the investigation telephone Sergeant Steve Brooks at Suffolk Police headquarters traffic unit on 01473 613500.
