RAIL travellers experienced delays after a fatal accident brought trains from East Anglia in and out of London to a standstill.

The accident, between Chadwell Heath and Seven Kings, about 10 miles out of Liverpool Street, happened at around 7.00pm yesterday. It is understood one person died after being hit by a train.

The 1842 service from Liverpool Street terminated at Shenfield and passengers were picked up by the 1900 service, which finally started moving at 9.30pm.

Mainline services experienced added delays on top of limited 20mph speed restrictions imposed by Network Rail for extreme heat, and signal problems in the Romford area.

The 2000 service from Liverpool Street and the 1800 from Norwich were both cancelled.

An Anglia Railways spokeswoman said: "The 1842 service from Liverpool Street was involved and all lines were closed while police attended.

"The 1842 ended at Shenfield and the 1900 service picked up those passengers, and at about 9.30pm it started moving again.

"Anglia Railways apologises for any inconvenience to passengers caught in tonight's events and we would ask them to contact our customer services line with regards to compensation on 08456 504090," she added.
