Suffolk Police named the man found dead in Holywells Park, Ipswich, on Monday morning as Christopher Pearce, 54.
The Police Complaints Authority have been informed about the incident because Mr Pearce had been released from custody on Sunday morning after being arrested for suspected drink driving.
He was head of biochemistry and had been at Ipswich Hospital for 12 years.
