A MEMORIAL to a soldier who died in First World War was severely damaged by suspected joyriders careering through a Suffolk village.The bench, which surrounds an oak tree and was restored for the Millennium, was struck by a car on Saturday night in Back Lane, Washbrook.
A MEMORIAL to a soldier who died in First World War was severely damaged by suspected joyriders careering through a Suffolk village.
The bench, which surrounds an oak tree and was restored for the Millennium, was struck by a car on Saturday night in Back Lane, Washbrook.
Police are investigating the incident, which is thought to have happened at between 10.30pm and 11pm.
The memorial has stood near the Brook Inn for decades in memory of Lt Lawrence Bernard, who died in the war in 1916. He was the only son of a Copdock family.
Jennifer Jones, village recorder for Copdock and Washbrook, said: "It is very, very upsetting, especially as we lost our village sign three months ago in the storms.
"That has never been recovered and now this has been damaged on the other side of the road. We are feeling very down about it."
