NEW homes will not be built on a field on the edge of Ipswich after a planning application was thrown out.

Ipswich council's development control committee unanimously rejected an application to build up to 150 homes on the site between Goodwood Close and Thurleston Lodge.

The proposal had provoked outrage from local residents – and 60 letters of objection were sent to Civic Centre.

A similar application had been turned down by the council 14 years ago.

Council officers had urged rejection of the application, by F and J Properties Ltd, on a number of grounds.

It was outside the built-up area of Ipswich, the land was designated as countryside in the existing and future local plans, it is not large enough to sustain local facilities, and the large north Ipswich development is only a short distance away.

"Frankly we didn't need to discuss this for long – it went against just about every planning guideline in the book," said development control committee chairman Trevor Payne.

The news was welcomed by Epsom Drive resident David Keeble, one of the objectors to the proposal.

"That's very good news. We've lived here 32 years and during that time there have been four or five applications to build along there – they've all been rejected," he said.

"Our concern is about the traffic it will generate on these small roads and on Henley Road, that's bad enough as it is," he added.
