Tracey Morgan, the wife of Reverend Ian Morgan of St Mary at Stoke Church in Belstead Road, Ipswich, was arrested on suspicion of stealing from her employer on September 26. No criminal charges have yet been made.
A police spokeswoman said: "I can confirm we have arrested a 43-year-old woman from Ipswich, for theft by employee.
"She is due to answer bail at Ipswich Police Station on October 24."
Mrs Morgan, 43, was unavailable for comment at her Ancaster Road home in the town.
Nick Clarke, spokesman for the Diocese of Ipswich and St Edmundsbury, declined to comment apart from to say: "The police have informed us of an arrest."
He declined to confirm that Mrs Morgan was not employed by the church.
He added: "While the police carry on with their investigation, the diocese will be making no further comment."
Parishioners of the church have been told that Rev Morgan is on sabbatical leave, after he stopped taking services about two months ago.
He also holds the post of chairman of governors at nearby Stoke High School.
Members of the congregation have been asked to say prayers for the couple. Cards of support have also been posted to their home, but few knew the reason why they had been absent.
