A POSTMASTER was taken to hospital today after he was badly beaten by two raiders as he opened his Ipswich store.

Police and paramedics were called to the post office in Hawthorn Drive at about 7.10am after it is believed two people entered the premises just as the postmaster was about to start trading.

Suffolk's latest attempted robbery happened on the day a campaign was launched to make the county's post offices safer.

The robbers approached the victim from behind and demanded that he hand over money, before beating him. It is not thought the victim was hit with any kind of weapon.

The robbers are believed to have fled empty-handed from the Chantry store and driven off in a dark-coloured Audi.

The victim received head and facial injuries and was taken to Ipswich Hospital by ambulance. His injuries are not thought to be serious.
