The male driver of a Mini, believed to be aged 20, was airlifted to hospital by air ambulance after a dramatic rescue following the two-vehicle smash.
The air ambulance landed in a nearby field and waited while firefighters had to be cut the roof off the Mini in order to free the man from the wreckage.
The driver of the Mini was taken to Ipswich Hospital with what an ambulance spokesman described as 'critical head injuries'.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, which happened on the B1456 at Wherstead, in an area known as the Strand under the Orwell Bridge.
