After the brutal killing of Ipswich barmaid Janet Fleming we and the Pub Estate Company, which owned Harley's pub in Stoke Park, put up a £10,000 reward that led to vital information being given to the police.
Now, following the quashing of Leon Sobers's appeal against his conviction for the murder in December 2000, the full story can be told.
"This is the most desperate of cases and we were utterly shocked no national newspaper took up the crusade," said Star editor Nigel Pickover.
"It was our duty to find a significant sum of money to help bring forward crucial witnesses."
